Objectives:

  1. To understand the purpose of the United States Department of Defense’s inquiry into hyperbaric oxygen for persistent problems after mild TBI.
  2. To gain a high-level overview of the findings from these studies.
  3. To understand the purpose of collecting normative data for clinical and research use.
  4. To describe the primary demographic factors that influence auditory and vestibular performance.
  5. To describe the general methods for interpreting clinical auditory functional MRI.
  6. To understand the barriers to implementation of auditory functional MRI in a research setting.
  7. To discuss possible explanations for auditory symptoms after mild traumatic brain injury that exceed damage detectable via pure tone audiometry.
  8. To understand the limitations of measurement technology in quantifying auditory dysfunction.
  9. To understand the effect of mild traumatic brain injury on central auditory processing, and the difference between those with and without clinical hearing loss.
  10.  To determine the relationship, if any, between auditory pathway disruption and lateral auditory processing dysfunction.
  11. To understand the potential relationships between vestibular performance and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress in the military mild TBI population.
  12. To discuss recommendations for co-evaluation of vestibular function and affective symptoms in this population.
  13. To understand the role of MR spectroscopy in evaluation of mild traumatic brain injury.
  14. To describe limitations of the functional MRI technology for mild traumatic brain injury.
  15. To understand the relationship between eye movement behavior and mTBI.
  16. To identify specific tracking tasks and corresponding eye movement behaviors that are most sensitive to the effects of mTBI.
  17. To evaluate the sensitivity of eye tracking tasks as a measure of response for the treatment of mTBI.
  18. To discuss the long-term symptom course in study participants with mild traumatic brain injury.
  19. To describe effective strategies for retention of participants in longitudinal studies.
  20. To describe the safety of a course of 40 hyperbaric oxygen or sham chamber sessions in individuals with persistent post-concussive symptoms after mild traumatic brain injury.
  21. To describe effective methods for maintaining blinding in hyperbaric oxygen randomized trials.
  22. To understand the purpose of composite and global outcome measures in clinical trials.
  23. To describe the various methods of computing composite outcomes in the BIMA and HOPPS studies and to summarize those results.
  24. Understand the overall magnitude and direction of HBO2 effects on PCS and PTSD symptoms, other self-report outcomes, and neuropsychological outcomes across all available studies.
  25. Identify whether treatment effects observed in those with mTBI and oncomitant PTSD (mTBI + PTSD) differ across outcomes from effects observed in those with mTBI alone.
  26. Evaluate outcomes relative to increasing partial pressures of oxygen, to identify potential dose-response relationships and better understand the role of the sham control.

Goal

For over 45 years the UHMS has been the primary source of information for hyperbaric medicine and physiology worldwide.  This evidence-based, peer-reviewed scientific journal-based CME has as its goal to address identified professional practice gaps and provide a quality CME opportunity which will improve scientific knowledge and skills for undersea,  hyperbaric and wound care physicians, nurses and technicians, and other clinicians and personnel whose practice includes undersea, hyperbaric medicine and wound care.
