Objectives:

  1. Understand that among individuals with PTSD, surfacing of new memories, accompanied by emotional distress and somatic pain, is common during hyperbaric medicine treatments.
  2. Understand how professional support and reassurance should be provided in case of memory surfacing during HBO2 to ensure treatment adherence.
  3. Understand that in treating patients for any indication, HBO2 medical teams should be aware and capable of addressing memory surfacing, particularly in those with a history of trauma.
  4. Discuss how blood is constantly off gassing in the pulmonary system, making the direction at which nitrogen travels is from the tissue to the blood where it is eventually off gassed through the pulmonary system. 
  5. Understand that in supersaturation, decreasing the size of a single bubble by one order of magnitude reduces the growth time.
  6. Discuss how resonant acoustic standing waves effectively rupture bubbles of 300µm to 900µm within a simplified swine thigh model.
  7. Discuss how resonant acoustic standing waves within a limb may non-invasively accelerate the dissolution of bubbles present in the bloodstream via bubble rupture.
  8. Understand that in the state of resonance, the electric signals monitored across the piezoelectric transducer are sensitive to minute changes in bulk mechanical properties of the system such as a sudden introduction of a micro-bubble, generating bubble detection signals.
