Course Information
The UHMS Level 1 – Medical Examiner of Divers course is designed to prepare Physicians and Non-Physician Practitioners (NPPs) to conduct medical examinations of commercial, recreational, scientific, and public safety divers and determine their fitness to dive.
The course follows the approved curriculum of the Diving Medical Advisory Committee (DMAC), the European Diving Technology Committee (EDTC), and the European Committee for Hyperbaric Medicine (ECHM), ensuring a balanced, evidence-based, and internationally recognized program of instruction.
Approved by DMAC/EDTCmed as a Level 1 – Medical Examiner of Divers course through December 31, 2025, this program provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to perform diver medical assessments in accordance with globally accepted standards.
Course Goal
The goal of this course is to equip Physicians and NPPs with the expertise needed to evaluate the medical fitness of professional, recreational, scientific, and public service divers. Through comprehensive instruction in diving medicine and fitness-to-dive assessment, participants will learn to identify medical conditions that may affect diving safety and make informed recommendations regarding an individual's ability to dive.
Upon Completion, Participants Will Be Able To:
- Conduct comprehensive fitness-to-dive evaluations.
- Assess medical risks associated with diving activities.
- Apply internationally recognized standards and guidelines for diver medical examinations.
- Evaluate commercial, recreational, scientific, and public safety divers.
- Make informed decisions regarding a diver's fitness for participation in diving operations.

- You will be required to bring a laptop or iPad/tablet. This is needed so you can take the online exam and to follow along with the lectures as you wish. Paper copies of the exam will be available.
- You will be provided with a web link to access all the lecture presentations & handouts.
- You will be given a notebook to take notes (this notebook will have just the lecture topics and objectives).
